ECOSMO - ECOSystem Model

Ute Daewel

ECOSMO is designed to simulates biogeochemical processes in marine ecosystems. The lower trophic level model includes 16 state variables with a functional group approach including two zooplankton groups, three phytoplankton groups, the nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon cycle, oxygen, detritus, biogenic opal, dissolve organic matter, and three sediment groups. Recent developments of the model include coupling to carbon chemistry, higher trophic level components (ECOSMO E2E: fish and macrobenthos), sea-ice biogeochemistry and chemical pollutants. ECOSMO can be flexibly coupled to various hydrodynamic models through the coupling interface FABM. The model has been applied to various marine ecosystems (NWES; North Atlantic/Arctic; global) and serves as the ecosystem component for the CMEMS Arctic Marine Forecast Center.
